A great day

I have tried to not make political posts of late, because durn but people get riled up... That plus the letters I'm always getting about my foul language are just two things I don't really care about. But I am so proud of us today. The health care reform bill may be, as a friend of mine just said, as watered down as a beer in a Utah bar, but it's something. A start. I am glad that the screaming naysayers don't have all the control all the time. only, say, 95%.....

As Tiny Tim said, God Bless Us, Every One. (Without the God, for me, but you can keep it if you like.)

Julie,

I appreciate your foul mouth. At least you speak your mind, and when you do, it's with passion. Cussing just enhances feeling. Anyone who cannot see that, well.... piss off!

I may be Canadian, but we got it made up here having Healthcare. All the bitching in the world ain't gonna take away the fact I have not paid for anything at a hospital. My taxes pay it. Hell, we're all in a recession. Your taxes will or have been raised to pay for it. So take the free Healthcare! What's the matter with you people, kick a gift horse in the mouth?!

Anyway... glad you are not one of the others Julie. I just don't see them as smart.

Best regards always.

I grew up with free healthcare (yes, I'm from Europe). After living in the US for a year I'm glad that finally somebody had sense to change laws that needed to be changed.
However, what I found most bizarre was and is the fact that the law only passed after some conservative patriarchs got to take away women's freedom of choice of keeping a baby or not more securely than it is already anchored in the (strange) law. What kind of trade is that? The right of a woman to decide about her own body against the health care of the whole nation? What??? Both should be manifested in a democracy, not just one ..... And the right to medical treatment should not be dependend on some abortion bills. Like saying: I want to get the cake, but only if I can have butter too. Weird .........

I'm from the UK and have been following the healthcare thing with great interest and I'm delighted about the vote! I will never understand how people can think that the right to be treated when ill or injured should depend on how much money they may or may not have.

Oh,Julie, I am so very happy that you wrote about the great historic Sunday night we witnessed!! I came to your site this morning hoping you had posted something--not sure why I thought you would as you don't do that very often anymore, but just had a feeling & you made my day!! Yes, the bill is a bit (OK, very!) watered down, but considering there were so many who wanted our President to fail "No matter what," it is, indeed, "A great day." I was so proud of Barack Obama last night--his comments hit all the right notes. I could go on & on but I'll just say Thank You!
I've a feeling you'll be celebrating tonight with a Gimlet--or two! I plan to raise my glass and toast Teddy! He worked so hard & long for this moment...
Oh, and about the "foul" language--I will simply echo the words of the first writer of the day--a grand Canadian--for those who don't get it, don't get you, don't understand your passion--"piss off!"
Enjoy this great day, this grand moment.
All the Best,
Marnie

Julie-

I never thought you had a foul mouth. If anyone does, I do.

It didn't seem like that in your book (which is what this is based on cary21.blogspot.com) but I remember lending my mother the book and her saying it was more about sex than Julia.

As of the health care plan, I didn't really care. But as I think about it more, maybe it might lead to me not getting health insurance with a full-time job. Hopefully, it'll be a freelance writer.

Anyways, keep writing on your blog and hopefully, mine will be read. Good luck. :)

Here in a truly divided city - it's been an interesting day. Happy for me because I supported the bill, unhappy for me because none of my coworkers did and I had to listen to their grumbling all day!
It's watered down, but it's a start. I hope everyone else comes around. Having no insurance SUCKS (I did it for 6 years and talk about EXPENSIVE!!)
Just finished your second book a few weeks ago - I loved it.

Like Jen, I was happy that it passed, but not happy to hear all the pissing and moaning. I even ended up "un-friending" someone on Facebook because his postings were so aggressive.

When I worked in the heathcare field, it drove me nuts to have to tell a parent that their child needed surgery when they had NO coverage, yet we routinely treated prisoners from the local prison for free. Well, not free, but on the government's tab. Every law-abiding citizen should have the same benefits we extend to society's scumbags.

As for the swearing, fuck 'em if they can't take a joke! :-)

Julie,

I have to say I enjoyed the movie much more than the book. I am disappointed in the book.
I guess I thought it was going to be more about the recipes and less about your life.

I do have to say though Kudos for having thought it! It was a creative idea, and you had the tenacity to finish it.

Sadly, I have discovered that I have now discovered the reason why the French are so thin despite all the butter they use. It is because what they slather it on sounds incredibly unappealing to me. Calves liver, bone marrow, duck, aspic, etc. All seemed quite unappealing to my palette.

What I will say though is that as a woman who finds cooking dinner sometimes a daunting task, it amazed me that you would put in 3, 4, 5 hours to make a dish, and not even eat until eleven at night while maintaining your full time job.

On Health Care Reform, I am still trying to figure out why the American public would trust the government to handle health care when they have watched for the last 50 years how Public Education fails, the United States Post Office is in debt, and anyone who has an aging ill parent, how Medicare treats them.

Not sure, putting reform in the government's hands is the way to go.

Hats off to you for a great idea!
Two questions: 1) Are you "rich" now? and 2) Did you ever have a baby?

Outside of my apartment in a really trendy, young part of Brooklyn I was getting on the subway when I saw a booth on the street that was asking for OBAMA'S IMPEACHMENT. I had to think for a minute "where the hell am I?" I told the guy, discreetly, that he can go F<3CK himself. I worked too hard to see him elected. Republicans are like toddlers- you have to feed them the healthy stuff with a babyspoon. Wow, I am so mad just thinking about it. Obama is a good man. I am sure he has his own agenda, but he's a good man. I know that after what America's been through the last, I don't know...50 years, It's hard to believe the president CAN be a good man. I have complete faith he will do the best he can for my own good. That doesn't mean he will win, but I'm not asking for that.

i hope that EVERYONE can go to the doctor when they have a cold and get some relief ... and not a bill after for more than they make in a week. (while many people who choose not work, do not pay a dime to go the emergency room everytime their kid throws up.)

i think it has been unfair the way that some people have had to make payments for things that people who do not work and or do not pay taxes get for free.

6:27 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Have you heard the details of the bill? It requires all US citizens to buy health-care coverage, if they don't already have it. This can cost a family upwards of $17,000 a year. Anybody who doesn't have coverage has to pay the US government a fine! This bill is just a national version of the horrible legislation that Massachusetts has. In Boston the average wait times for appointments in for cardiology are 21 days, dermatology 54 days, obstetrics-gynecology 70 days, orthopedic surgery 40 days, and family practice 63 day. Other parts of the state have even worse waits. The legislation's effect boils down to less accessibility to doctors and expensive fines for the uninsured. Don't get me wrong, there are positive changes in the bill, like the portion dealing with pre-existing conditions. Overall though, I don't think this is a change for the better.

Oh, and another thing.

Re the comment: Have you heard the details of the bill? It requires all US citizens to buy health-care coverage, if they don't already have it. This can cost a family upwards of $17,000 a year.

Premiums would also be capped at a percentage of income, ranging from 3 percent of income to as much as 9.5 percent.
Source: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/22/your-money/health-insurance/22consumer.html?src=me&ref=homepage

One would have to earn over $175,000 a year to expect premiums of $17,000 a year and I doubt they will be allowed to be that high. At that level of income, however, I could afford it.

I myself would say Sunday, March 21st was a bad day. To me it just doesn't make sense why the government would try (and succeed) to pass government health care when 76% of Americans are against it. They are in Washington to represent us, but it seems that is exactly what they are NOT doing.

And now I just heard today that Nancy Pelosi has an 11% approval rating and Harry Reid has an 8% approval rating. A ginormous majority are unhappy with them and what they are doing, but they don't even care. They just go right ahead with their plans. They are not supposed to be in Washington for themselves, they are their for their constituents - but they were definitely acting for themselves when they pushed this through. They say they are doing this for us, but it's not what we wanted. I can't remember the exact number, but Gallup did a poll and the results were that 80 something % of Americans were HAPPY with their insurance plans. So it sounds like 80 something % of Americans do not need government health care.

I heard a Congressman (I can't remember from where) on the radio last week say something that I can't believe I had not ever thought of myself - he said, it's funny how Progressives are always arguing that you can't tell a woman what she can and can't do with her body, and yet they turn right around and want to tell every man, woman and child in this country what they can and can't do with their bodies. That is so blatantly hypocritical it's stunning!

I think what rubs me the wrong way more than anything is that the government will be telling me that I HAVE to buy something (their healthcare) that I do not want to buy. Judge Andrew Napolitano said that with this government health care plan the government is forcing you to buy something in order for you to be a legal citizen of this country. That is quite a shocking idea. Can that really happen in America??? Well, it is happening now. I thought this was the "Land of the Free". I do not feel very free when the government is not letting me be free. I can't even believe it!

Sorry Julie to go on this rant. Your blog is not exactly the place for a political rant. But you brought it up and so then I started typing and I just couldn't stop!

I'm all for listening to folks with different thoughts on this, but I don't understand the terror. And I don't understand what's so wrong with insuring more people. I have a friend - a friend with money, a good job, etc... A young woman and healthy - who cannot be insured because of a pre-existing condition. A congenital heart defect. That to me is wrong, sick, and un-American, and I'm proud that we have changed things for people like her. This "ramming it down our throats" crap is just that - invented, Fox News, synthesized crap. Totally insane.

Is my opinion.

The bill is far from perfect - in my opinion it doesn't go far enough. And I understand that I don't understand all the ramifications. But I'm willing to pay taxes for someone who before was not eligible to get health care. Totally.

Julie,

I have been busy with so many things in life, a partner who is taking a break from his MBA due to losing both his parents, as well as I losing my own father 6mos after they passed. I'm from CO, he from VA, we live in VA for now and I just finally got to see the movie Julie & Julia. I loved it, her and you made me proud, you did great work, as she has. I too cook, blog and would love to write one day. I have collected cookbooks for almost 30 years. I too one day will have a gorgeous kitchen and cook for so many people it will be an understatement. My honey has said for nearly 10 years now that I should open a resteraunt that is how well he loves my cooking. For now we are renting a small but modest house in central Virginia, its beautiful here.

I too agree that the healthcare bill that just passed is a start. None of us have any idea how this will truly be beneficial or negative, after so many countries worldwide have their own healthcare, and its a good thing. America needs something badly. We, my better half and I have seen how it works in several countries, and it does work, it benefits the people, most higher taxes, but you are coverd, you need not go to get help when sick because your bank account will go empty. I believe this to be a wonderful new thing for our Blessed Country.

Bless you, your work, and both of your inspirations to so many of us who will never atire to the FoodNetwork, but live life to the fullest, and regret none.

Hi again Julie,

That sucks that your friend can't get insured because of a pre-existing condition. I understand how you would be willing to pay more in taxes to help her, but to make everyone in America pay more in taxes... people are strapped enough for cash at the moment and taking more out of their paychecks doesn't seem like a good idea.

I have a friend who as a child was diagnosed with leukemia. She went through chemo and all that and when she was in remission she was dropped by her insurance. It was hard to find anyone who would insure her. So her dad became an insurance salesman himself and was able to find a way to insure her. Thank heavens he did because as a teenager she came out of remission and had to get a bone marrow transplant. I'm happy to report that it was successful. My point is, it sucks to be dropped from your insurance and to be "uninsurable" but if you're creative you can always find a way to make things work out. Putting the government in charge of health care is just going to screw it up even more - just like they screw up everything else that they touch.

As far as "this ramming it down our throats crap is just that - invented, Fox News, synthesized crap" - I don't know if you noticed, but each and every Congressman that Obama had to convince to vote for his plan WAS DEMOCRAT. It was his own people he had to convince. He was "ramming it down" the throats of his own people. You hear about all these things with stupid names like the "Louisiana Purchase" or the "Cornhusker Kickback" and right now were mostly hearing about Stuback - These are all Democrats. I don't think Fox News invented that. It's just a fact. The Dems are 100% in charge in Washington at the moment. They can pass any single thing they want if they are all together on the issue. It took them a year to pass health care because there were so many Dems who were uncomfortable with it and knew their constituents were against it. But whatever Obama did behind closed doors, he one by one brought them to the dark side.

I read this too much now. It's like my e-mail. But I have to comment on this. It made me laugh heartily. Oh you Republicans, you're so cute. Like Jessica Simpson. "platymapus".

1. You hear about all these things with stupid names like the "Louisiana Purchase"- Paula

Among other things, the Louisiana Purchase was the purchase of Louisiana. I don't find that very stupid. It's an obvious choice for the name...Obvious like providing healthcare because we are a FIRST WORLD NATION.

2. if you're creative you can always find a way to make things work out- Paula on health insurance

This made my brain tingle with rage. This is not an afterschool special. "Just keep your head up and everything will go your way!" No. Healthcare is IMPOSSIBLE to pay for out of your pocket. Even most insurance plans are too expensive. Not everyone can just say "hey, I think I'll go into selling insurance because I need affordable healthcare!" not to mention the realities that that is just a f*cking stupid way to approach a nation of uninsured people. Paying an extra thousand dollars a year in taxes (in my tax bracket) is acceptable to provide health insurance not only for myself but for millions of others. If you can't afford an extra thousand dollars a year on the low end of the class system, you aren't going to make it, in general. I think it's HILARIOUS HILARIOUS HILARIOUS how the people against healthcare talk about how the recession would effect your ability to pay extra taxes, like this is a permanent state of being...while also being support of taking away support programs for low-income families. You people are so selfish it's inconceivable. I get it, you want to f*ck over poor people and young people...but don't speak for me.

3. Quote from Dale- "There is nothing in the world more dangerous than sincere ignorance, and conscientious stupidity. You have a moral obligation to be intelligent".

Julie,
Your one of the luckiest women ever! Meeting both of my food idols Ruth Riechel and Rachel Ray, I am so jelous and happy for you! What was it like? I am a major foodie and I love everything about food. My friends tell me that I should write about food but not my cup of tea. Writing and food run in my bloodstream but well I want to write about people and adventures.
I'm so sorry that Robert died. I know how awful that hurts. My prayers go out to you.
I read both of your books and I don't mind the swearing. What's your favorite meat recipe? Out of curiousity. I hope you have a great spring break.

Hi, i'm from portugal, i've just finished watching the movie made from your book, so i came here to know u a bit more. I think that you are a wonderful writer and although i might not write all that well i can tell that u do. What moved me is that u gain life after starting something that u really love doing and u proposed yourself to do that and kept your word. I, myself, am going through a difficult time right now, and it's really inspiring the way you "shined up". I have a passion for photography as u would see by my own blog although i'm still studying (psychology btw). I hope some day i can have as much joy doing what i love, as you do. Thank you for reminding me that we can actually do anything we want and maybe be sucessful on (in?) it.
As a cooker, i'm just terrible, but oh well. Lol.

Thank you,

Agree on healthcare - great day.
I am a doc and I lost my job soon after I told my boss I'd vote for Obama for President because I believed in healthcare for all (didn't exactly volunteer that info - was asked repeatedly to vote Republican, even with threats).

I am glad the bill passed. We work so hard. Now may be our kids will have a healthier future.

Oh, and to those who say taxes will go up and such. Guess what - taxes will go up no matter what - healthcare bill or not. At least this time they'll pay for something useful and real and good (unlike the wars we're experiencing now - who do you think is paying for those?).

P.S.
Julie, good job on the books and thank you for speaking out on healthcare!

Congratulations from Sweden to the health care bill! Maybe one day you can just walk into any dr office and get free care, without insurance, like here.
Last night I watched the Julie & Julia movie - twice in a row - and I just loved the FEELING of it, the pictures, colours, the FOOD. Once the credits stopped rolling I had to start again, and get some food from the kitchen to eat while I watched the whole thing again. So congratulations to that too! I reviewed it on my blog where I review movies by (all female) directors, but it's in Swedish so you can't understand it. Needless to say, I'm also working on a novel. Ok - have to go now (cutting a documentary film about the North Cape and I'm late) just hade to say you're very inspiring - 5 yrs and no publisher yet, so I needed the inspiration!

To be quite honest with you I hadn't heard of you until this movie came out.. That's not a bad thing.. I found your blog by simply typing your name into the msn search engine and there you popped up..No surprise.. I thought that the movie paid homage to a very passionate woman that inspired possibly millions to learn to cook.. I have never learned to cook french food.. But I think after watching the movie, I might give it a whirl!

Do you ever respond to comments? I would like to know if you still blog about your cooking adventures and if you have ever thought about doing it again and if you did would you do it differently this time around?

Greetings from another blog virgin.

Just saw the movie and really enjoyed it. I remember watching Julia Child on tv as a very young child. My mother was a fan. I'm glad I got to know more about her through the movie, what an amazing woman.

My hat's off to you for completing all those recipes. That takes an enormous amount of hutzpa? and determination. It's always so encouraging to see other women overcoming obstacles in their lives. I'm surfing some pretty huge waves in my life right now and each day I prove to myself that not only can I survive loss (my dad in Dec), turmoil (separation last May), post-natal depression, and single parenthood, but I can thrive! I have returned to school to upgrade my skills in order to return to work as a graphic/web designer after being out of the workforce for nearly 6 years.

I've heard it said that courage is fear that has said it's prayers. God grant all of us the willingness to keep on keepin on.

ps I'm glad to know I'm not the only foul mouthed gal around

Hey Julie

My name's Claudio and I am a college student in Pennsylvania. I'm from Chile and I just wanted to say that even there, Julia Child's recipes are seen in some small places as an American Art. I have just recently watched Julie and Julia and found the whole movie so uplifting. I myself am a creative writer and to dive into a task as that is truly an inspiration for us little writers who dream of New York. I've had a few publishing deals offered, but like we both know, it's hard to impress people with passion or talent. They hunt for a rare ruby in a field of diamonds.

I wanted to ask you how you get started publishing your story. Your seem like a headstrong girl and your story really opened the writer inside me. Yet, my confidence as writer is somewhat shaky. I think if I could show it to an editor of any kind and just got an honest reaction, that would cease my worry by alot.

Anyways, good luck in all your future literary endeavors [ although doing all of Julia Child's recipes in a year is already a huge endeavor]!

Best of luck,

Claudio

Blogger Ginny said...

Let me start by saying--I'm an "Independent" voter.
I'm very confused with the comments about the healthcare "reform" that are being left here.
A very good family friend of ours lives in Germany. She pays more in taxes annualy for healthcare than what she would pay for a private plan in the U.S.She has been diagnosed with cancer and is on a 5-year waiting list for treatment. She paid into the system her whole for over 50 years, only to sit like a waiting duck... to die. As with so many others in Germany, her hope is that she can attain private health care. Her daughter is trying to get her help in the U.S.
The U.S. is information saturated, yet the information is incorrect. Our family friend also brought to our attention that hypochondriacs swamp the doctors offices and hospitals. If you're curious about the effectiveness of government... anything, look at government-- active. If you had the money to put your kids in a private school, would you? This new bill doesn't deal with the elephant in the room. We need to attack the real problems with healthcare. I'm not suggesting we shouldn't do anything, I'm stating we need to address the real problems (insurance fraud, suits, pharmaceutical co's, etc...). It's not logical to compete with your own money, which is what this plan suggests. Let's get smarter, not more information muddled.

I bought a Blogging for Dummies book and that says nothing about getting noticed by search engines. Trying to follow the various descriptions of how to optimize the search online
fall on deaf ears as I am not that tech savvy.

Maybe you can help me.

I'm from Canada. We have "free" health care, not that free when you consider we pay about 42% in taxes, here in Manitoba anyway, 7% sales tax and 5% GST (Goods and Service Tax, was only supposed to be on a few things, now it's pretty much everything) and you have to wait 2 hours at the walk-in clinic to get in or 6- 9 hours at emergency at a hospital.

I haven't read much on what you are being offered by your government as far as health care goes, but if it's the same as here, get ready for long lines!

I saw the movie just the other day and it inspired me to write a blog on banks here in my country, and as the frustration kicks in with dealing with banks it makes me want a hug and a kiss from my old crushes from tv and the movies when I was a kid. Yes, I'm separated and single at the moment, can you tell?

I don't want to cook because of the movie, but I sure want someone to cook it for me and I would definitely eat it! My only problem with my blog is I am not a writer, more of a complainer...no wait a justified complainer! Anyway, I am also long winded and I am very happy you succeeded!

Dear Julie,
I just watched Julie/Julia for the first time. I say that because I will watch it hundreds more. The thing is, when the movie came out I said to my friends, "I did that!". Well, not in 365 days and not in on a blog (there were no blogs in the early 1970s!)But I, too, loved food and artistic creations and the joy it could bring, so I "made my way through" her books, including the most marvelous mayonnaise I have ever eaten.
I confess, to this day (and in my mid-60s with a bed & breakfast in Asheville) I have never made tripe! But Julia's, cooked so slowly, overnight at a very low temperature, is surely the only one I will ever attempt!
Continue to 'wear the mantle' well as inspiration for so many other cooks to pick up Julia's lovely books - and those wonderful TV shows (and Dan Ackroyd, too!)

Hi there long-time lurker, first-time poster...

And before I start let me preface my comment by stating that, no I am not a Utah native - and while stuck in the land of the lost, I was born and raised in Germany, so when it comes to talking beer I have a clue.

The famous 3.2% Utah Beer myth:
1. Beer sold in grocery stores in Utah measures ABW (Alcohol by Weight) instead of ABV (Alcohol by Volume). If you convert the 3.2 ABW into ABV it becomes 4.0 - which does sadly put most beer brewed to Utah standards in the light category. Strangely enough, however, Guinness Draught - you know, the beer thick enough to cut with a knife - comes in at about 4.0-4.2% ABV (and no, Guinness does not brew differently depending on what state it goes to).
2. There are locally brewed high quality and "high-point" beers available, such as Wasatch Beers "Devastator Double Bock" which comes in at 8% ABV.
3. For such crappy, watered-down, low quality beer, Utah beers have sure won a crapload of awards from competitions/associations such as the North American Beer Awards, Great American Beer Festival, World Beer Cup, European Beer Star, and the North American Brewers' Association.

P.S.: I didn't say our liqour laws aren't bizarre sometimes (i.e. the 8%er I was talking about - you have to buy that in a state-liqour store), just that the beer here is not as bad as people think it is...

I just watched Julie and Julia and enjoyed it... even though I don't share your passion for cooking, although my hubby does.

I guess I will be one of the few on here who will say... I am not happy about the new health care bill. I don't like the govt telling me who I can and can't see. I can think for myself, although the govt seems to think we all need them to do the thinking for us.

Yea, just throw out that silly Constitution that has gotten us this far, who needs it after all? Read a book for me, "Big Black Book of Communism" and watch a movie also, "The Goebbels Experiment."

The rest of us do not hate those people who can't afford health insurance, we simply believe in not STEALING from the rest of us to pay for it! The price to pay is far too high, as seen in the book and movie above. Silly pinkies, when will you ever learn that Communism and Socialism don't work! Well, unless you call 100 million deaths in one century alone working.

No worries it will be overturned, as you can't force people to do what you want, thus stealing their free will from them. The votes will show exactly what I mean.

Just finished watching the movie based on your book and it was such an inspiration. It was a great portrayal once again of the words we have heard over and over..."Do what you love and the money will follow" or "Do what you love and you will never have to work a day in your life." Thank you Julie for inspiring others.

First to start a blog, 2nd i laughed so hard i choked and hadd a near death encounter and now to find out who wroote this inspired movie. I was then compelled to write something to her. I scribbled down my thoughts and got back onto google. Not to be defeated whhen finding nothing i decided i'd put myself out on a limb and search for her publisher. Clearly you understand the genius of this wonderful lady too and i felt confidedent that you would help me with my mission. I would be forever gratteful if yyouu could find any way possible to forward this message to the lady herself!

I must add i am in the process of having some kind of breakdown and count myself lucky to be alive. Thoughts havve starrted floooding out of me and im compelled to put them on paper, or envelopes, anything to hand really. i thought if anyone ccould appreciate this Nora Ephron could.

Hi Julie

Just came across your blog following a (late) recommendation from a friend, and read this post with interest.

I work for a Member of Parliament in the UK and write a satirical political blog in which I am often very critical of our UK political system, but your delight in obtaining a US version of the healthcare that we in the UK take so much for granted was a salutary reminder that politics and politicians CAN still achieve good things.

Thanks for making my working life feel meaningful again, and for your well-deserved success!

I had such hope for that bill and I have to admit to being super disappointed. It's not just watered down but it actually is designed to hurt small business owners and those that cannot afford insurance...I mean, without making health insurance affordable for all, and making it illegal to go without it, well, that just sucks. There are some perks as well though (such as insurance companies no longer being allowed to turn you down for pre-existing conditions), I realize this. I'm torn.

I will say this: we are paying about $550 a month for our family to have health insurance, plus co pays (about $100 or so, much higher if I have a flare up of my condition..long story). My husband works for the state, so this is pretty much as good as it gets in terms of health care packages. And that's for Kaiser Permenente, with which is like the Mc Donalds of health care. You are totally treated like a number there. I'm considering switching to Blue Cross/Blue Shield but that would be like $700/mo and the co pays would be higher. Ouch.

I appreciate your foul mouth too. I have one as well.

You are without a doubt one of the most self-centered, egotistical people that I've ever had the displeasure to learn about... And you disrespected one of the pioneering, great chefs of our time, you twit (and that's being polite)... So what if Julia Child was a virgin when she met Paul Child, back in the days of yore, in the 1940's, good girls, which apparently you are not one of, did not have sex until their wedding night... And the fact that you called Julia a "bitch", well it's no wonder she didn't like your blog !!!! As for your comment today about leaving the "God" out of Tiny Tim's quote, don't be surprised if when it's your time, and you get turned away at the "pearly gates", you have no one to blame but yourself, you deserve to rot in hell, although our Father God and our Lord Jesus, love all of their children no matter how bad the are... Also, maybe something Julia didn't know at the time when she wrote her fantastic, ground breaking cook book... But when you poach an egg, you need to put between 1/8th to 1/4th of a teaspoon of white vinegar in the water.. No the egg won't taste like vinegar...This way when the water comes to a boil and you crack your egg into the water the white part of the egg will NOT spread all over the pot and will adhere to the yolk better... Further more, how can you call yourself a "GOOD AMERICAN" when this country was built on the philosophy of "ONE NATION UNDER GOD" !!! It's so nice to hear that you agree about the new health plan that the anti-Christ, Mr. Obama has come up with, you two deserve one another.. GROW UP YOU ARROGANT, SMALL MINDED CHILD and yes, I said child as there is no way that you are an adult, your blog proves that, over and over again... I still can't understand what any man sees in you, except the publicity and a paycheck... May God bless you and your saint of an ex-husband !!! You are a serial cheater and obviously don't believe in the wedding vows you took, is it any wonder that your ex-husband cheated on you to, you belong in the scum of the earth bucket !!! May the good Lord help you...

I recently moved from the U.S. to Canada. While in the U.S. I had a great job with one of those great health care plans. I am with you in that at least there is a start for universal health care in the States, however it will be a huge boon to the pharmaceutical and health insurance companies.

Here in Canada, I will pay about 580.00 a "year" for my health care - I shudder to think what the insurance companies will charge a month in the U.S. Also, my current medicine costs about 1,000 per month in the U.S. Here in Canada I will pay no more than about 78.00 per month.

Maybe one day, the United States will find the right way to do this too.

Wow. You have no friggin' clue about the healthcare debacle. Doing the wrong thing is never better than doing nothing. Never. Yes, a reform needs to happen...but the answer is not the bloated, gov't take over of anything. Never is.

As for the foul mouth, I don't get why so many people make such a big deal about cussing. I use the F word more than most and never apologize for it.

I just want to say, your movie was amazing, but now that I have read both of your blogs I believe that was due to the director and not so much yourself. Julia was right for her opinions, you do use the F bomb too much and Obama is an Idiot. I really liked you and sympathized with you in the movie, Afterwards I looked for your blogs and discovered that I didn't so much sympathize with you, It's just how the movie portrayed you. The Health Care is idiotic and I cant wait till Obama is elected out of office, he has screwed our nation up way too much.

Im leaving this comment here, anyone can reply, although I wont reply back as I made this little google account just for this purpose. I dont expect you to keep my post up here either, as you seem to be 'delete' happy with most posts that talk you down. Many people would not be able to afford health care without the scheme, and I am sure many in the US can not afford a stay in hospital. It is amazing that so many people can be convinced to vote against their own best interests, just because rich conservatives make it sound like a communist idea!

I am so thank full that you pulled through and didnt give up!

Im sorry to say that the way i first became aware of you was through the movie, But ever since i have been even more obsessed with baking and yourself and Julia Child! I've read your books a countless amount of times and Julia Childs and I own the movie!

I have a little story to tell you! Im sure if you still read all the comments or what happens or even if you have read this far in to my comment but my little story goes a little like this! :)

I have a friend who used to hate baking and cooking and kitchens and all the stuff i absolutely adore, but this one time she came to stay for a week with me and during this week i gave her your novel to read and told her that she must read it! as it is one of my favorites and she read it! and once she read it she herself fell in love with baking and cooking and kitchens and food! we then watched the movie and now everytime she comes over we watch the movie and cook something from Julia Childs cook book!

SO i guess what im am really trying to say is that you are an encouragement to not only the elders and middle aged but also to us teenagers! And to that i am greatly thankfull for!

The movie was good, funny, and without Meryl Streep as Julia Child's would have been relegated to the $4 DVD bin at Walmart. Only in America could someone pull off a con like this, reminds me of the 2008 election.

Julie,
You are truly an unusual person. With you background from Amherst, I would have totally expected you to be against the healthcare reform. I work at a county hospital so I really have my ear to the ground at the grass roots level. It is an atrocity that America has historically been so selfish as to preserve the right of a (relative) few to have unlimited wealth (i.e. doctors), while the health of the nation has gone down the tubes. I do now believe that the AMA is truly one of the most powerful entities in the nation. With respect to the commenter from Europe. I was amazed that in at least some countries free healthcare is truly for everyone --including non-citizens. I had a professor whose husband became ill while on holiday in Paris. He had a major surgery, etc. while there --free of charge. What would have happened here? There is no such thing here as "free healthcare". In America truly nothing is free. Healthcare reform will simply make healthcare accessible to all (hopefully). I do believe that abortion is murder. My tax dollars should not go to support what I believe is morally wrong--just as yours should not go to support my religion.

I agree with you, it may be watered down, but the essence is there. I feel and hope that once you start a universal health care program, you can't go back. So, hopefully, the States will end up with more and more over the years.
Here in Canada, we complain about the waiting lines and in some cases, months of waiting time, which I still do think is ridiculous, but the truth of the matter is, we have it, and it's free.

So for me, Amy Adams IS Julie Powell and I am fine with that.

Based on your language and infidelity, it sounds like you might be a candidate to give up your atheism and give up your life to God.

Hi Julie,
Just finished watching your movie for the second time and I found it truly inspiring. I love to write, but even though it's your choice - apparently what I've gathered here - there is a lot of swearing and foul language in your writing and books.
It's disappointing, but each to their own. No one makes someone read a book that they don't want to read.
So if a book is well written, funny and some swearing is needed to convey the genre of the story, than it's fine with me. When swearing isn't needed then why use it. Again it's your life, your choice.

Re the health care in US. No-one here in Australia can figure out why on earth people in US don't want a free health care system. We have it in Australia. Bulk Billing at our local clinic and free out patients, emergency and operations at hospitals. People can also take out insurance if they want to go 'privately' with their own doctor etc.
It certainly has helped our family and we are very thankful for it. Everyone pays 1% in taxes and you don't notice it coming out of your pay.
Take care and enjoy life.

Julie,
Have to say that you are right, yes, far from perfect BUT a step in the right direction. I think that the people that are against this bill are not those that need it...yet. I know all too well the merits of this bill. I have a daughter who has not been able to get out of bed for the most part since late 2011. She had a full scholarship to college, graduated and was onto graduate school with a fellowship and full tuition plus a stipend for the next five years. Didn't get past the first semester. Now losing her scholarship, she can, because of the way things are now, be put back on my insurance even though she is married. If not, her husband would have to give up his full graduate scholarship just to find a job that would give them both better insurance and enough money to live on. As it is, they are having to give up their modest apartment that they planned on living in for the next six years and are having to move into a mobile home that need major work. People lose focus if it doesn't affect them in the here and now or if it doesn't benefit them in anyway. Just want to say, love that you say it like you feel it!!!

The problem has always been that health ins. has been connected to employment. It should be completely separate. I have just got a part time job and have noticed that many more companies are employing part timers instead of full time. Terrible for the economy, terrible for workers, and terrible for employers who have to resort to this because of the health bill. All down hill from here, until the powers that be take another look at it and do the dang thing properly. I would also like to make note, that many churches and para churches established multi organizations for the welfare and educational benefit of many in need, but leave the God bit out if you wish.Have a happy Labour day, if your employer has given you the day off that is.
